Morning Skate: Jeff Finger is My Favorite Leaf

Published by SL at 10:41 am under Morning Skate Edit This

There, I said it.  It’s 100% the truth, and outside of Hagman I don’t really give a fuck about the rest of the roster.

The day was July 1st, 2008.  On the announcement of Cliff Fletcher’s signing of Jeff Finger to a 4-year $14 million deal, I asked: who is Jeff Finger?  The answer that I was left with was:  he’s the guy that sat most of Colorado’s playoff games as a healthy scratch.  But unlike most impatient Toronto hockey fans I waited to give the 28 year-old a look on the ice before passing judgment.  Although, I do contend that Fletcher may be approaching senility.

I liked what I saw, Jeff Finger is slightly above average defensively, and he hits like a metric shit-tonne.  Finger started the season well after missing the first couple weeks due to injury; he was among Leafs’ leaders in +/-, ATOI, and Blocked Shots.  That’s why when I stumbled across this piece at Study of Sports (read this, it’s more than interesting) , I was a little bit skeptical.

Did Fletcher get fingered?  I think the only person with a definitive answer to that question is Joel Quennenville.

Editor’s Note: Finger has since seen his +/- take a dive and he’s averaging about 21 minutes a game, and oh yeah he’s out for a couple weeks now.
